Oswald Birley (1880-1952) was a British portrait painter who was popular in the first half of the 20th century. He was born in New Zealand, but his family moved to England when he was a child. Birley studied at the Royal Academy and later became a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He was known for his portraits of important figures, including Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth, and King George VI. He also painted landscapes, still lifes, and genre scenes. Birley was particularly skilled at capturing the likeness and personality of his subjects with his realistic, detailed style. In addition to his painting career, Birley was also a member of Parliament for seven years and served in the army during World War I. He was knighted in 1933.
